Every Friday for the past six weeks, I’ve sent out a newsletter called The Friday Report to a small but mighty following. Usually, I fill the newsletter with links to articles, shows, products, Twitter accounts, and other Internet stuff I’ve been into during that particular week (you can get a taste of past issues here and here).
But today, for a special Inauguration Day edition of The Friday Report, I felt it necessary to change things up and send out some TLC instead. So I put together 10 self-care tips to help you get through today and any other day you might find yourself feeling hopeless or scared or both.
Protesting, resisting, and speaking up for what’s right takes a lot of energy and effort, which is why being extra nice to yourself in the process is no joke. As I prepare for my local women’s march tomorrow, I’m spending today with the following advice in mind.
1. Unplug. Our 24-hour news cycle is exhausting. Don’t feel guilty if you need to take a break from news coverage in order to destress and unwind. Put your phone away, stay off Twitter for a few hours, and do something that doesn’t involve the latest headlines.
2. Exercise. Endorphins make everyone feel better. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, go for a walk, practice some yoga in your living room, or head to the gym to clear your head.
3. Hang out with friends. I’m super excited to spend this evening at a happy hour event with some badass young women. Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes with a friend to remind yourself that you’re not alone.
4. Read. Anyone who knows me knows that reading fiction is my #1 cure for anything. Whether you need to escape into a story, learn something new, or better inform yourself, read something that makes you feel calm and collected.
5. Journal. I stand by the claim that journaling has saved me thousands of dollars in therapy. Writing down your thoughts and emotions, even when they don’t make sense, might help you process confusing feelings without even realizing it.
6. Practice gratitude. If the idea of journaling scares you, write down three things you’re grateful for instead. It’s impossible to feel angry or sad when you’re in a state of gratitude.
7. Do something creative. Paint, color, draw, play music, dance around in your underwear, write a poem, cook something new. In the words of Carrie Fisher via Meryl Streep, “Take your broken heart, make it into art.”
8. Get plenty of sleep. When you’re tired and sleep deprived, you’re more likely to be stressed and irritable. Operating from that fragile place of flight-or-flight isn’t sustainable for anyone. Prioritize sleep and don’t feel bad about giving yourself a few extra hours every now and then — you probably need it.
9. Hydrate. I’m serious! Like sleep, making sure you get enough H20 can make a significant difference in how you feel. Especially if you’re planning to attend a march or demonstration, make sure you bring water so you can avoid the uncomfortable woes of dehydration.
10. Slow down. Why does it often feel like we need to move through our days at the speed of light in order to get everything done? Do yourself a favor and slow down the pace. It’s amazing how much more in control you can feel when you take a step back to stop and smell the roses. It’s pretty nice.
